by: Brenda Brown Lasko Chapter 4 The Lemley Connection PETER AND GEORGE LEMLEY Of the 11 children born to old George Lemley and Catherine Yoho, there were probably only two of them that came to Belmont County, Ohio. Most of their other children remained in Greene County, Pennsylvania, with the exception of two or three who ended up in Monongalia County, West Virginia. Young George and his brother, Peter, were among the first to settle in York Township. They are mentioned in several historical publications dealing with early Ohio settlement, such as McKelvey's History of Belmont County, Ohio. George Lemley was married to a Miss Shriver and was known to have 4 children when he came to Ohio. Almost nothing is known of his wife or if she ever came to Ohio with George. She died somewhere around 1800 so it is doubtful that she ever left Pennsylvania. On February 11, 1794, Peter Lemley married Mary Ann Cathers, the daughter of William Cathers and Elizabeth Ingraham. (There is a strong possibility that the well known author, Willa Cather, also descended from this Cathers family.) This marriage and the birth of their first 4 children took place in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Their children were:
After coming to Ohio, George Lemley married again. On April 5, 1803, he and Catherine Gates were joined in marriage by David Ruble in York Township. I do not know what relationship Catherine was to George Gates but have often wondered if she could have been a niece or even a younger sister of his. I do not have any record of additional children born to George Lemley's second marriage but the children of his first marriage were:
ABEL BROWN'S DATELINE I do not know exactly when Abel settled in Virginia or how long he stayed but it appears he must have remained for a number of years because several of his children were born in Virginia. The information I have found locates him in the Wheeling area. During this era George Washington had been in the Ohio Valley several times as he patrolled the territory. The Revolution had ended by 1783 and Washington returned to the area to check land he owned land near the Ohio River in 1784. Abel's first child was born 2 years after Washington was elected as the first president of a new nation in 1789 and by the time he finished his second term of office, Abel was the father of 4.
