Chapter 4

The Lemley Connection

PETER AND GEORGE LEMLEY

Of the 11 children born to old George Lemley and Catherine Yoho, there were probably only two of them that came to Belmont County, Ohio.  Most of their other children remained in Greene County, Pennsylvania, with the exception of two or three who ended up in Monongalia County, West Virginia.  Young George and his brother, Peter, were among the first to settle in York Township.  They are mentioned in several historical publications dealing with early Ohio settlement, such as McKelvey's History of Belmont County, Ohio.

George Lemley was married to a Miss Shriver and was known to have 4 children when he came to Ohio.  Almost nothing is known of his wife or if she ever came to Ohio with George.  She died somewhere around 1800 so it is doubtful that she ever left Pennsylvania.

On February 11, 1794, Peter Lemley married Mary Ann Cathers, the daughter of William Cathers and Elizabeth Ingraham.  (There is a strong possibility that the well known author, Willa Cather, also descended from this Cathers family.)   This marriage and the birth of their first 4 children took place in Greene County, Pennsylvania.  Their children were:

1. Robert Lemley, born in Greene County, PA on November 11, 1794 and married Jane Brock about 1821 in Monroe County, Ohio.

2. Catherine Lemley, born in Greene County in 1796 and married Samuel Martin on December 27, 1821 in Belmont County, Ohio.

3. Elizabeth Lemley, born in Greene County in 1797 and married Jesse Carter.

4. Peter Lemley, born in Greene County on February 20, 1802 and was never married.  He died on April 19, 1872 in Monroe County, Ohio.

5. Nancy Lemley, born in Belmont County, Ohio in 1805 and married Isaac Brown (son of Abel Brown and Lydia Stuckey) on April 5, 1827 in Belmont County.

6. George Lemley, born in Belmont County in 1806 and married Jane Hendershot.

7. Sarah Lemley, born in 1808 and married John Otho West.  One of the descendants of this couple married into Leander Brown's family and will be mentioned later in this story.

After coming to Ohio, George Lemley married again. On April 5, 1803, he and Catherine Gates were joined in marriage by David Ruble in York Township.  I do not know what relationship Catherine was to George Gates but have often wondered if she could have been a niece or even a younger sister of his.  I do not have any record of additional children born to George Lemley's second marriage but the children of his first marriage were:

1. John Lemley, born about 1790, and married Sarah Sproul on January 26, 1815 in Belmont County, Ohio.

2. Catherine Lemley, born on July 14, 1793, and married Woodman Okey on May 21, 1815, in Belmont County, Ohio.  The Okey family was very prominent in the history of Belmont and Monroe Counties.

3. Mary Lemley, born on August 13, 1795, and married Edward Reed on August 15, 1816, in Belmont County.

4. Sarah Lemley, born about 1800, and married John Job Smith on January 15, 1818, in Belmont County.

ABEL BROWN'S DATELINE

I do not know exactly when Abel settled in Virginia or how long he stayed but it appears he must have remained for a number of years because several of his children were born in Virginia.  The information I have found locates him in the Wheeling area.   During this era George Washington had been in the Ohio Valley several times as he patrolled the territory.  The Revolution had ended by 1783 and Washington returned to the area to check land he owned land near the Ohio River in 1784.  Abel's first child was born 2 years after Washington was elected as the first president of a new nation in 1789 and by the time he finished his second term of office, Abel was the father of 4.  It is at this point all of our families were in preparation to make a big move into a new land across the Ohio River into the Ohio Territory.
