| CLIMBING THE BROWN
FAMILY TREE
by: Brenda Brown Lasko Chapter 8 Isaac Brown's Generation Isaac Brown and Nancy Lemley were married on April 28th, 1827 in Belmont Co., Ohio and became the parents of eight children that we know of, 5 sons and 3 daughters. They lived their lives in pretty much the same fashion as their parents did before them. They had grown up together and their marriage was no surprise. There wasn't a lot of traveling done so being isolated in small communities forced the young people to select mates from the children of friends and neighbors. It was not unusual for cousins to marry in these times or for several children from one family to marry several children from another neighboring family. (You must consider that today you probably see more people in one day than these old pioneers saw in their life time.) Isaac was a farmer and both he and his wife were active members in the Amity Church in what is now called Steinersville. In the 1850's they are listed as first members of the Methodist Church in Monroe County. It seems they spent most of their lives York Township but could have lived for a time in Monroe County after 1850. The exact dates of death have never been proven for Isaac or Nancy but census records show that Nancy died between 1850 and 1860. In the 1860 census Isaac was living in Switzerland Township, Monroe County with five of his children and Nancy is no longer listed. Isaac was still living during the 1880 census and is listed in the household of his son, John, in York Township. One source says Isaac died in 1884 and was buried in the Amity Cemetery. I never found his or Nancy's grave there but the cemetery is in very bad condition with many of the stones laying face down in the ground and have all but disappeared. This is the result of the graves sinking and the stone falling forward into the hole created by the sinking grave. There are also many stones that are undecipherable so it is possible Amity Cemetery was their final resting place. My cousin, Verna Brown Rosen, lives on the property where the cemetery is located and is also a direct descendant of this family. The children of Isaac and Nancy Brown are as follows: 1. George Brown, was born on June 14, 1827, in Belmont County, Ohio. He married Mary Helms on October 6, 1849, in the same county. She was the daughter of Benoni and Rachel Cross. The Helm's are believed to be of German descent and came to Belmont County from Virginia. George and Mary were the parents of 16 children. Four of these children died very young but the other children all lived to marry and have children of their own. Hundreds of the descendants of this family still live in Belmont County, in the Powhatan area, and perhaps an even larger number live in Washington County, Ohio. The story of them and their children will continue later. 2. Mary Brown was born in 1829 and until recently we didn't even know her name. There is nothing else known of her. 3. Abel Brown was born in York Township, Belmont County, Ohio on August 4, 1832. He married Clara Stewart about 1862 in Washington County, Ohio. They were the parents of 10 known children who were all born in Ludlow Township, Washington County. Abel was club footed and a cobbler and farmer by trade. Abel and Clara lived their lives in Ludlow Township and both died in 1901 just 10 days apart. They are buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Washington County. Their children:
4. John Brown was born in 1834 in York Township, Belmont County, Ohio. He married Susannah Gates, daughter of Solomon Gates and Hannah Stuckey about 1857. (Solomon was the son of George Gates.) They were the parents of 2 children. John and Susannah took care of Isaac in his last years. They lived most of their lives in York Township but the dates of their death and burial sites are unknown. Their children:
5. William Moreland Brown was born on December 13, 1836, in York Township, Belmont County. He married Mary Mellissa Kinney about 1860. They were the parents of 13 known children and lived most of their lives in Belmont County. Mary died in 1890 and Moreland in 1897 and both are buried in the Powhatan Cemetery. Their children:
6. Robert Brown was born in 1838 in York Township and there is very little known of him. In the 1860 census he was living with his father, Isaac, in Switzerland Township, Monroe County, Ohio. He was 21 years old then and unmarried. My father said family history tells that Robert moved across the River to West Virginia and was never heard of again as far as anyone in the family ever knew. 7. Lydia Ann Brown was one of a set of twin girls born in 1845 in York Township, Belmont County. She married George M. Doty on January 20, 1872, who died a short time later. On June 26, 1875, she married David B. Workman and they were the parents of one child. When and where Barbara and George died is not known.
8. Barbara Jane Brown, twin sister of Lydia was born in 1845 in York Township, Belmont County, Ohio. She married Israel D. Boston on April 13, 1865. They were the parents of 5 known children and lived in Belmont County until after the birth of the children. In 1880 they were living in Marshall County, West Virginia and most of their children remained in West Virginia. The date and place of Barbara's death are not known but Israel died in Monroe County, Ohio in 1899. Their children:
